Good Harbor (2001)
By Anita Diamant

Many reviewers were unenthusiastic about this book, expecting another bestseller like Diamant's precious Red Tent.  But I really enjoyed this story of a friendship that develops between two women who meet at temple.  Kathleen is 59, a children's librarian and the mother of two grown sons.  Joyce is 42 and has just bought a summer home in Gloucester; she has also just published a romance novel.  Kathleen has just received a diagnosis of breast cancer.  Joyce, while pleased with her writing success, is struggling to keep her marriage together.  The two women, take walks along the beach and become good friends as Kathleen works through her cancer issues and Joyce (without discussing it openly) works through marital issues.  Questions of faith and faithfulness are discussed. Good writing.
