The Last September
By Elizabeth Bowen
Lois Farquar is a young woman living with her wealthy aunt and uncle in Cork, Ireland ~1920. While her days are full of the social life of the idle rich (tennis parties and dances), she yearns for freedom. Meanwhile, Sir Richard Naylor and his wife Lady Myra seem oblivious to the political events going on around them, which will sound the death knell of a way of life the British have defended for years. Elizabeth Bowen juxtaposes the tensions between the young who long for freedom, and the older who fear independence.
