The Best of James Herriot (1982)By James Herriot
This anthology is taken from Herriot's early books: All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, and The Lord God Made Them All. (All titles are derived from Cecil Alexander's iconic hymn "All Things Wise and Wonderful".)
Herriot (real name: James "Alf" Wight) was a vet from 1940-91, working in a country practice where the majority of his patients were farm animals. The appeal of his stories is not just the animals but also the owners who cared for them. These stories, selected by Herriot, give a well-rounded picture of his life as a country vet, and are interspersed with wonderful photos and sketches. For anyone who is having a hard day, or just wants a story to take them back to a simpler time, James Herriot is heartily recommended!
