Author Patrick Taylor has combined his medical know-how, experience, and humor to create a delightful account of a young physician's first year out of med school. It's the early 1960s and Barry Laverty has just accepted an apprenticeship with the crusty Dr Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly in tiny Ballybucklebo, Northern Ireland. While he is at first critical of Dr O'Reilly's manner, he comes to respect the older doctor and finds he still has much to learn, as he is exposed to new symptoms and illnesses. Like veterinarian James Herriott, Barry finds himself getting immersed in the lives of his patients, especially a lovely young engineering student crippled by polio.
This is an enchanting book, just the kind of light reading to divert one's attention from the disturbing news of the day. Fortunately, Taylor continues to write a number of follow-up novels: An Irish Country Village, An Irish Country Courtship, etc.
