Ivorie Walker has recently lost her mother. Left alone with a small farm to care for, and feeling a bit like an old maid, she finally thinks she may settle down with one of the many bachelors who court her. But as she starts to envision a life with George, a little boy, a mute and hungry victim of abuse, starts to steal vegetables from her garden. Ivorie reaches out to help the needy child, finding him unresponsive at first, but then delighted to see him start to warm up to her. George, however, wants no part in this effort. Ivorie is faced with a choice, and ends up finding her true calling.
