The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and the Golden Age of Journalism (2013)

By Doris Kearns Goodwin

Writer Doris Kearns Goodwin has provided a great study of the dynamic friendship - later bitter rivalry - between Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, their characters and personalities, and the way they reformed government in ways that would help the poor and marginalized.  She also credits the gifted journalists who exposed much of the "muck" (e.g. monopolies and trusts) that made the rich richer and the poor poorer. Goodwin has, as usual, deeply researched the lives of both presidents, and even provided extensive backgrounds on the various journalists who covered Roosevelt and Taft.  Though extremely lengthy, I enjoyed every word of this very well-written account.

Dan Harrington just published a very interesting column comparing Teddy Roosevelt with our current commander-in-chief.  See "Teddy Trump".
