Used and Rare: Travels in the Book World (1997)By Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone
In today's world of audiobooks and kindles, it's nice to know there's still a market for the tactile, paginated, printed book - and that "used and rare" books are very collectible. This volume chronicles the authors' adventures in buying used books, from their first effort to purchase an affordable birthday gift to their forays into auctions, fairs and antiquarian bookshops in cities like Boston, New York, and Chicago. They share many discoveries regarding value and rarity of certain titles, and include lots of anecdotes about authors, booksellers, and what features make certain titles more valuable. While other books may provide lists of collectible titles or give data on why or what to collect, the unique aspect of this "book about books" is the fun part of the chase and discovery.
The authors, who are prolific writers in a number of genres, followed up this title with two others: Slightly Chipped and Warmly Inscribed
